Bruce Jr. Battles Variety of Issues During Regional Weekend in Texas

4/22/2013

Inside Line Promotions – WILLIS, Texas (April 21, 2013) – Thank goodness the 5th annual Eagle Motorsports Rock ‘N Roll 50 is this weekend.

For Tony Bruce Jr., who will race and promote the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., this Saturday, it’s a welcome race following a frustrating weekend.

“It’s one of my favorite race tracks that we go to all year,” he said. “Probably why it’s one of my favorites is because we usually run well there. I could use a good weekend.”

Bruce Jr., who is tied for fourth in the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour standings, is coming off a frustrating weekend with a pair of ASCS Gulf South Region races in Texas. After battling truck and trailer issues during the eight-hour drive to the Lone Star State, on-track woes plagued the two races.

“It was one of those weekends where it really tries you,” he said. “Friday was terrible. We started in the back of the heat race and it was one lane.”

A high pill draw started Bruce Jr. sixth in his heat at Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Waco, where he finished fourth. That placed him in a B Main, which Bruce Jr. finished second in to advance to the main event. While the team improved throughout the night and were gaining positions, Bruce Jr. found himself upside down midway through the feature.

“In the A Main, we were pretty good,” he said. “I saw an opening and shot to the bottom of the track. That opening closed pretty quickly. I just kind of went for it and unfortunately it didn’t work out.”

With help from other teams in the work area, Bruce Jr. returned to the track and rallied to finish 10th – his third top 10 this season.

The team continued to face truck issues as they drove more than two hours to Willis for Saturday’s event at Gator Motorplex.
On the track, Bruce Jr. maneuvered from fourth to third in his heat race to earn a position in the feature. However, passing was a premium on the high-banked, quarter-mile oval and Bruce Jr. placed 11th.

“It was pretty much right on the bottom the whole A Main,” he said. “We just couldn’t do anything in the A because it was one lane around the bottom.”

With the two results, Bruce Jr. has finished in the top 15 in all but one race this season.
