Inside Line Promotions – FORT WORTH, Texas (Sept. 22, 2013) – Tony Bruce Jr. overcame a rough start on a rough track to continue his top-10 streak on Saturday.
After placing sixth in his challenging heat race at the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour Port-a-Cool U.S. Dirt Track Championship at Texas Motor Speedway, Bruce Jr. rallied to win his fourth B Main of the season and notch his eighth straight top-seven result in the main event.
“It was alright,” he said. “We started fifth in our heat race and the track was pretty much one lane around the top. We were the first heat race and the first race on the track since they reworked it. Unfortunately heat races go by so fast those couple of things I tried didn’t go well and we ended sixth.”
That started him seventh in a consolation, which transferred the top three to the main event. Bruce Jr. quickly worked into the lead and pulled away to a victory by more than 4.3 seconds, locking himself into the feature.
“We had a good car in the heat race and didn’t make very many changes for the B Feature,” he said. “We had a solid car. We got ourselves stuck behind the eight ball early and had to start in the back all night.”
After starting 18th in the feature, Bruce Jr. picked off nearly a dozen cars to place seventh. It marked his eighth consecutive finish inside the top seven.
“We were solid,” he said. “I really wish we had a caution at the end with a couple of laps to go. The track was right around the top. It was real rough from all the rain they had the day before. We generally do pretty good on rough race tracks. We continued what we had all night long and was able to make some good moves. About halfway through that race our car came around and we were rolling pretty good.”
With the strong finish, Bruce Jr. maintained fifth place in the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour championship standings. He and the tour will head to Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., on Friday and Saturday for the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial.
“Jesse was a good friend to me and a lot of people,” he said. “Both of those guys were tremendous people. We still see Jack (Hockett) a lot. You see somebody from the Hockett family almost every time you go to a race. Everybody wants to win that race mainly because it’s a good way to honor those guys and it’s a special event.”
Bruce Jr. placed second during the preliminary night of the event last year and sixth in the finale.
