Inside Line Promotions – OWASSO, Okla. (Feb. 23, 2014) – Tony Bruce Jr. is a lot more comfortable heading into this year’s season-opening event this weekend than he was a year ago.
At this point last season, Bruce Jr. had a new engine and chassis combination, which took the One 8 Motorsports team longer than they expected to adapt. Once it clicked, Bruce Jr. was a contender on the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
“Toward the end of the season I think there was only a handful of races we didn’t finish in the top five,” he said. “It took us a quarter of the season, almost half a year, to get everything figured out.”
After recording four feature wins and finishing fifth in the championship standings last season, Bruce Jr. will return to the premier 360ci sprint car series in 2014, which begins this Friday and Saturday at Cocopah Speedway in Somerton, Ariz., for Rounds 1 and 2 of the Cocopah Cup Challenge.
“The only difference from last year to this year is not only do we have Ford engines, but we have a couple of Chevys that Chris Moss did for us,” he said. “We didn’t change anything on the mechanical side of the race car. We’re basically the same as last year. We felt like from what we had from the beginning of the year to the end of the year was completely different.”
Bruce Jr. said his goal for this season is simple.
“Win as many races as possible,” he said. “The points thing is nice, but in all reality if I can go back and say we had 10 to 15 wins we’re going in the right direction.”
Bruce Jr. has never reached double digits in feature victories in a season and his ambitious goal kicks off this weekend at Cocopah Speedway – a track that Bruce Jr. nearly scored a $20,000 win at last November before a mechanical failure ended his bid for the triumph.
“The first couple of times we were there the race track is kind of deceiving,” he said. “It’s really slick so you think you need to tighten the car up. What we figured out is that we left the car freer and it was really nice. We’ve pretty much got the same setup in the car from when we left last time.”
