Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (April 13, 2014) – After a tough draw put Tony Bruce Jr. behind from the start last Saturday at I-30 Speedway, he rebounded to post his sixth top-10 finish in the last seven races.
Competing with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour at the quarter-mile track, Bruce Jr. opened the night by starting on the outside of the third row in his heat race.
“The way the track is now, the top is a lot harder to run than it has been,” he said. “The heat races were one lane on the bottom. We just had to take what we could get.”
Bruce Jr. advanced one position to place fifth, which relegated him to a B Main. He started on the outside of the second row of the 12-lap consolation race, which transferred the top three to the main event.
“At the beginning I felt like we were a lot faster than those guys on the bottom,” he said. “I knew we had a faster car than those guys. I just had to wait a few laps for things to open up.”
Bruce Jr. made the top groove work as he powered into the lead and drove away to the B Main victory, which lined him up on the outside of the ninth row for the feature.
“The track was super slick again,” he said. “A lot of the guys that started up front never got off the bottom. We knew starting so far back we’d have to move around and try some things.”
With the bottom lane clogged, Bruce Jr. worked the outside lane and even went through the middle en route to a 10th-place finish.
“I wish we would have passed a few more cars in the A Main, but it was a solid run to get up to the top 10,” he said. “I was up out of the groove and trying to make something happen.”
He remains second in the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour championship standings – only 11 points out of the lead.
Bruce Jr. will make his 410ci debut this weekend during the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series return to Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, on Friday and Saturday for the Texas Outlaw Nationals.
“I actually feel like we have a good shot at being competitive even though we don’t run a lot of 410 stuff,” said Bruce Jr., who picked up his lone victory of the season at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on March 21. “Not only the tradition part of it, but the aspect that we have a good shot at being competitive to even run up front is something that excites me about next weekend.”
