Inside Line Promotions – PARK CITY, Kan. (June 30, 2014) – Tony Bruce Jr. scored a pair of top 10s last weekend in his first appearance of the season driving for Ochs Racing.
Bruce Jr. kicked off the NCRA and ASCS Sooner Region co-sanctioned weekend in Kansas on Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park in Dodge City for the Steve King Memorial. He maneuvered from sixth to fourth place in his heat race.
“I got a couple of spots on the start,” he said. “We had a good car. The track was wet and it was tough to pass.”
That locked him into the feature, which he started on the inside of the sixth row.
“We had a good start and I was up to sixth mainly because a lot of guys went in on the top and got tight,” he said. “We were able to rotate the bottom.”
Bruce Jr. spent the majority of the race just outside the top five.
“It was definitely tough to pass,” he said. “It was super wet and pretty narrow as far as the racing groove went. We had a couple of guys in front of us get sideways and I had to take evasive action to miss them. It ended up costing us a couple of spots on the last lap.”
After spending most of the race in sixth place, Bruce Jr. ended with a ninth-place result.
The weekend concluded on Sunday at 81 Speedway, where Bruce Jr. finished where he started – third – in his heat race. That earned him enough points to advance into the main event, which he lined up on the outside of the sixth row.
“We made a lot of changes from the heat race,” he said. “We had a good car. I probably passed two or three on the very start and then picked them off one by one. On the last restart I was able to get by a guy and move into fourth.”
Bruce Jr. charged from 12th to a fourth-place finish, which was his eighth top five of the season.
He will team up with Ochs Racing this weekend for the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series Boothill Showdown on Friday and Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park.
