Inside Line Promotions – SALINA, Okla. (Aug. 17, 2014) – Tony Bruce Jr. recorded his 10th top five of the season on Saturday at Salina Highbanks Speedway.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t the result he hoped for after starting on the pole of the 30-lap Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event.
“We were fighting a tight car all night long,” he said. “We just couldn’t get it to rotate the corners. Whenever I was out by myself I was ok. Any time I was around cars and traffic I was terrible.”
After powering from sixth to third place during his heat race, Bruce Jr. earned a spot in the feature redraw. However, after pulling the No. 1 to garner the pole position, he dropped a couple of spots on the opening lap of the main event.
“It was bad to start on the inside,” he said. “The outside had a lot of momentum. I fell back to third on the opening lap. We were just too tight.”
Bruce Jr. battled inside the top five throughout the entire feature before ending fifth, which marked his fifth top five of the season with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
“It’s really never good to start on the pole and run fifth,” he said. “We have some work to do. Hopefully we’ll address those issues here at the shop and get better for next week.”
The One 8 Motorsports team will compete in a pair of Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour races this weekend, starting Thursday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., for the Mid-South Showdown. It is also the final TBJ Promotions event of the season.
“Riverside has always been good to us,” Bruce Jr. said. “I feel like it’s a race track we can go to and try to capitalize on the speed we’ve had all year.”
The weekend concludes on Friday at Lexington 104 Speedway in Lexington, Tenn., where Bruce Jr. made his debut last season.
“Last year we were running in the top five and I think we ended up getting a flat tire,” he said. “That was my only time there so I don’t have much to pull off of.”
He currently ranks ninth in the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour championship standings – only 10 points behind eighth place.
