Inside Line Promotions – GREENWOOD, Neb. (Sept. 21, 2014) – Tony Bruce Jr. is hopeful that a backup car will bring fresh luck to his One 8 Motorsports team next weekend.
Bruce Jr. will be forced to use the spare car following a wild crash last Saturday during the final night of the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour’s Midwest Fall Brawl at I-80 Speedway. He had advanced into the top five in the opening laps of the feature before his wreck in turns one and two destroyed the sprint car.
“It pretty much got everything,” he said. “That’s the eighth top wing we’ve crunched and the eighth front end we’ve destroyed this year. I’m not sure what it is about this season, but unfortunately I just keep getting caught up in all the wrong places at the wrong time.”
Bruce Jr. fought an uphill battle throughout the weekend starting with a high pill draw on Friday. That forced him to line up seventh in his heat race.
“You definitely needed to be on the outside row during whatever race you were in,” he said. “The track was so wet and if you got to start on the outside you could roll the top and get around some guys.”
Bruce Jr. ended seventh in his heat race, which started him on the inside of the sixth row of a B Main. He rallied to finish sixth, but was three positions out of a transfer.
“The thing I take out of it is even though we didn’t make the show we had a lot of speed in the car,” he said. “We just had circumstances of starting in the back in the heat race and the B Main. It didn’t allow us to transfer into the show and let us do what we wanted to, but on the stop watch we were just as fast as the guys up front.”
The One 8 Motorsports team took advantage of a good pill draw on Saturday, when Bruce Jr. led the distance of his heat race to lock himself into the feature. He then lined up on the outside of the fifth row for the main event.
“We went from 10th to fourth in the opening laps,” he said. “Unfortunately I got caught up in a situation where I couldn’t do anything to get out of it. Everybody was racing hard. The cushion in turns one and two was so thick and heavy that if you didn’t have the car kinda sideways it’d suck you in. Whenever (Brian) Brown slid in front of me I got tight and couldn’t do anything about it and it sucked me into the fence.”
Bruce Jr. smacked the wall before riding it for several feet. He was unable to restart the race and was credited with a 20th-place finish.
The One 8 Motorsports team will tackle the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial this Friday and Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
“It’s definitely a race you want to run good at,” Bruce Jr. said. “Not only is it a race honoring two good people, but it’s at Lucas Oil Speedway, which is owned by our series sponsor. We were fortunate to win the prelim last year and I think we ran third the final night.”
