Inside Line Promotions – LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Nov. 10, 2014) – Last weekend’s Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour Battle at the Border races felt more like train rides than sprint car races for Tony Bruce Jr.
The track was heavy and fast both nights at the Southwest tracks where he earned a couple of top 10s to push his total to 36 top-10 finishes this season.
“I think on Friday the race track was pretty fast and it actually got wetter as it went on,” he said.
Bruce Jr. advanced from fifth to third place on the opening lap of his heat race at El Paso Speedway Park in El Paso, Texas. He maintained that position, which was good enough to lock him into the feature redraw. Bruce Jr. then pulled the second-highest number – seven – in the random redraw to start the main event on the inside of the fourth row.
“My car kept getting tighter and tighter and tighter in the main event,” he said after finishing with a ninth-place result.
The weekend concluded on Saturday at Southern New Mexico Speedway, where he moved from third to second place in his heat race. That left him one position out of the feature redraw and starting ninth in the main event.
“The race track was extremely wet the entire night,” he said. “In the A Main we all got in a line and ran the bottom. It was just one lane right around the bottom.”
Bruce Jr. ended with an eighth-place finish.
“We all want to go out there and race and compete,” he said. “It comes down to having a race track you can do that on. We’re looking forward to going out to Cocopah Speedway this weekend. It’s a good race track where you can get out there and compete.”
Bruce Jr. will wrap up his season this Friday and Saturday at Cocopah Speedway in Somerton, Ariz., for the Cocopah Cup Challenge with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
He enters the weekend eighth in the championship standings – only 58 points out of sixth place.
