Inside Line Promotions – PARK CITY, Kan. (June 29, 2015) – Tony Bruce Jr. has accomplished something most drivers are only able to dream about.
Bruce Jr. swept a pair of NCRA and ASCS Red River Region co-sanctioned events in Kansas last weekend to extend his winning streak to three straight races.
“The only time I’ve done that is dating back to my micro days,” he said. “It’s a big accomplishment winning any sprint car race at any part of the country. The equipment is so good and the competition is so tough that any time you can get a win, let alone two, it’s a big accomplishment. It’s a testament to how good of a car we had.”
Bruce Jr., who piloted the Ochs Brothers No. 1x, kicked off the weekend on Saturday by winning a heat race at Dodge City Raceway Park in Dodge City during the Steve King Memorial. That put him third highest in overall points to garner the third starting position for the main event.
“It took us a few laps to get the lead,” he said. “They reworked the top of the race track and the top was the fastest way around. Once it started widened out we were able to maneuver around and get the lead. I had a tough battle with C.J. Johnson. He passed us in traffic and I passed him back one lap later.”
Bruce Jr. led a majority of the feature before capturing the monumental victory.
“It was really special,” he said. “It’s a race that means a lot to me and my family and everyone in Southwest Kansas. Steve was such a great friend to everyone. To be able to be part of the race that we helped start and to go actually win it in a Jetmore, Kan., based car meant a lot for us. It was one of my most sentimental victories that I’ve ever had.”
The momentum continued to roll on Sunday at 81 Speedway, where Bruce Jr. claimed a heat race after starting on the outside of the front row. Once again he ranked third in points to start the main event on the inside of the second row.
“I didn’t really get a good start and rode around in third biding my time,” he said. “I was able to get around Jake Martens for second. We got into lapped traffic and I took the lead, but a caution came out so they put us behind J.D. Johnson. I was nervous after that restart about whether I could get back into the lead. Fortunately we got back into lapped traffic and I was able to take lead with six or seven laps to go.”
The win marked a complete weekend sweep as the team conquered both heat races and features.
Bruce Jr. is slated to be off until the 25th annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals Aug. 6-8 at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa. However, he is open to opportunities to compete in the meantime.
