Inside Line Promotions – WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 28, 2015) – Tony Bruce Jr. kept his streak of earning a top 10 during the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial going last Saturday by recording an eighth-place finish at Lucas Oil Speedway.
He has now captured at least one top-10 finish during the marquee Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event all five seasons.
“I felt like it was a pretty good weekend,” he said. “We don’t race full time anymore and we’re just there to have fun. We did that.”
Bruce Jr. opened the doubleheader last Friday by charging from eighth to fourth place in a heat race, which locked him into the 11th starting position for the main event.
“That’s the thing about that race track, even in the heat races it’s ready to go,” he said. “It allows people to start in the back with a bad draw and earn their way into the feature. We had a good car both nights and we were able to get in the feature both nights without having to run a B Main.
“They reworked the track before the feature on Friday and it was good at the beginning. Then it got to be one lane around the top. We had a car good enough to get in line and ride. I was in the top 10 early and lost a couple of spots trying a different line because I was tired of riding.”
Bruce Jr. capped the night with an 11th-place result.
The weekend wrapped up on Saturday, when Bruce Jr. once again overcame a high pill draw to charge from eighth to third place in a heat race. That was good enough to make the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 2 to start the main event on the outside of the front row.
“We fell back to third at the start of it and was in fourth for most of the race,” he said. “I got to racing with (Tim) Crawley at the end. He slid me and I slid him back in turns three and four with about two laps to go. I went in way too hard, jumped the cushion and got on the flat spot by the wall. I lost four spots immediately. One mistake around good race car drivers can cost you. It ruined a top-five finish, but at the same time I’m there to race and stuff like that happens.”
Bruce Jr. rebounded to finish eighth.
He will return to competition Oct. 16-17 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, for the Winter Nationals with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
