Inside Line Promotions – CALIFORNIA, Mo. (July 27, 2016) – Tony Bruce Jr. capped last weekend by capturing a top-five result during his debut at Double X Speedway.
Bruce Jr., who piloted a sprint car for Jeff Smith last weekend, began the ASCS Warrior Region event by advancing from third to second place in a heat race. That locked him into the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 3 to start the main event on the inside of the second row.
“We were up to second at one point in the A Main,” he said. “We got beat by a lot of experience. Those guys race there quite a bit. At the end of the day we got beat by some guys who know how to get around that place better.”
Bruce Jr. ended with a fourth-place finish, which was his third top five in the last four races with Smith.
The weekend began on Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, where Bruce Jr. qualified 22nd quickest.
“We just didn’t time in very well,” he said. “We were the first hot lap set so it was pretty greasy and didn’t give us a good indication of what the track was doing. In the heat race the track was one lane around the top. I just didn’t get to the top fast enough and ended up third.”
That lined the team up on the inside of the 10th row for the main event.
“At one point we were up to 12th, but I made a mistake at the end that cost us a couple spots,” he said. “I felt like we had a pretty good car there. We got some things figured out about what we need to do so hopefully that sets us up good going into the 360 Knoxville Nationals in a couple of weeks.”
Bruce Jr. finished 15th.
He and Smith are slated to compete this Thursday at Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Mo., with the ASCS Warrior Region.
