Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Sept. 19, 2016) – Tony Bruce Jr. charged to a strong result at I-30 Speedway last Saturday during the Ralph Henson Memorial.
“We drew the highest pill for the heat races,” he said. “We had to start dead last and really couldn’t get much going. The track was pretty heavy at the beginning of the night.”
Bruce Jr. and the Smith Racing entry advanced from ninth to eighth place in a heat race, which relegated the team to start on the outside of the fourth row in a B Main.
“We were fortunate to make it out of the B Main,” Bruce Jr. said. “I got the final transfer coming off of turn four. It was close. The track was getting wider for the B Mains and for the A Main it was nice and racy.”
Bruce Jr., who rallied from eighth to third place in the consolation race, lined up on the inside of the 10th row for the 30-lap feature.
“There were no cautions,” he said. “It went green to checkered. It was definitely a race we wished we would have had a caution. We had a really good car. We just started too far back. We had a car that I could pretty much take anywhere on the race track and make moves. Whether I needed to run the bottom or the top I could pretty much go anywhere I wanted to.”
Bruce Jr. navigated from 19th to a ninth-place result, which was his 12th top 10 of the season. It also earned him the Hard Charger Award that included a bonus from KDN Promotions for passing the most cars.
“Sometimes whenever you draw bad it turns out ok and other times you just have to keep fighting,” he said. “That’s what we did. Everybody was resilient and had a positive mindset. That’s really important.”
The team is slated to return to action this Thursday through Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., for the Hockett/McMillin Memorial with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
Bruce Jr. claimed a Hockett/McMillin Memorial preliminary victory in 2013. He ended 11th and eighth, respectively last year and he recorded finishes of 10th and fourth, respectively, in 2014. In addition to the preliminary win in 2013, Bruce Jr. placed third during the finale that year. He also posted results of second and sixth, respectively, in 2012 and ninth in 2011 during the inaugural race.
