Bruce Racing Team Stays Steady in Texas

Jimmy Jones, HIGHLANDS, TX (March 8th, 2010) – Coming into last weekend’s ASCS Gulf South action in South Texas at Beaumont’s Golden Triangle Raceway Park and Highland’s Battleground Speedway, Tony Bruce Jr. and his Team were looking for improvements from their opening weekend in Florida. Although they didn’t find a vast improvement in terms of winning a race, they did, however stay steady with a pair of top five finishes.

“Friday night we started off our weekend at Golden Triangle Raceway and had a good draw for our heat…outside row 2. I was able to run second and got enough passing points to get into the re-draw. The track was pretty narrow all night and made it really tough to pass, so if you didn’t pretty much get everybody on the start, it was really gonna be about the whole race. So it was a little unfortunate that the track was extremely wet; they had a lot rain down in this area. So, it is what it is,” said Tony.

Tony’s heat race finish put him on the 3rd row outside for the A. “We were able to start 6th in the A main. After about three laps of battling with Jesse Hockett for 4th, we pretty much settled right in 5th and was unable to do anything. It was just a pretty average night for us. The track conditions didn’t yield too much for racing or anything, and we were able to lock in a solid top 5. It isn’t necessarily what we want, but we will take consistent finishes up in the top 5.”

The team traveled just 53 miles west on Saturday to Highlands, Texas , home of the ultra-fast Battleground Speedway for the Third Annual Gulf Coast Nationals. “I have always heard a lot about Battleground and was really excited to go. It was my first time there. So when we arrived, we noticed it’s a real cool track…really big and fast.”

Once again, thanks to his draw, Tony was able to start near the front of his heat. “We started inside row 2 for our heat race and was able to run 2nd, which again put this in the re-draw. We started 5th in the A and at one point we were all the way up to 3rd, then right there at the end somebody got around us and we went back to 4th.”

Tony expressed some disappointment that their early season experimenting hasn’t quite yielded the results they expected. “All in all, it wasn't too bad of a night for us; a little disappointing. We've been trying a whole bunch of different things getting ready for the National Tour season but it seems like we really haven’t found anything to make us extremely better. So, I guess we are gonna go back to the basics and get back to exactly what we know and to see what we can do from there. Like I said, you know the weekend wasn't too bad. It was just an average weekend for us. A 5th and a 4th place finish wasn’t great, but it damn sure wasn’t bad,” says Tony.

The team now turns it’s focus to a pair of stops with the Outlaws back in Texas . “We'll get ready for this weekend. Obviously two World of Outlaw shows this weekend at Kilgore (Lonestar Speedway), and then down to Houston Raceway Park on Saturday night, so we look forward it.”
