Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (Oct. 23, 2017) – Tony Bruce Jr. took advantage of a last-minute opportunity to compete during the 44th annual Winter Nationals last weekend.
Bruce Jr. teamed up with Mike Hayashi for the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
“Travis Rilat was originally going to drive it and he got a ride with Bryan Sundby,” Bruce Jr. said. “It worked out well for us. They were looking for a driver and I was looking a car.”
Bruce Jr. kicked off the event on Friday by finishing second in a heat race after starting on the pole.
“I made a mistake and missed the bottom on the start,” he said. “I felt like we still had a pretty good car. We started 10th in the A Main and were riding there. I was able to pass a couple of cars. I felt pretty good just learning what we needed to do to the car.”
Bruce Jr. picked up a pair of positions in the main event to post an eighth-place result, which was his 18th top 10 of the season and second with the ASCS National Tour.
He returned to the half-mile oval on Saturday for the event finale, which began similar to Friday as Bruce Jr. placed second in a heat race after starting on the pole.
“In the heat I got beat on the start, but we were able to lock ourselves into the show,” he said. “Unfortunately, the track was one lane around the top. There was a little grip on the bottom on the start for the race. Four or five laps into it you had to be on the top. We tried it a couple of times and lost a spot each time. It was one of those deals where I was trying to make something happen.”
Bruce Jr. ended the weekend with a 15th-place finish.
“I felt like it was a good weekend for us,” he said. “We were able to draw good and that always helps, especially at Devil’s Bowl. It was a solid weekend. Saturday wasn’t what we wanted, but the race track was hard to pass on.
“I want to thank Mike and his team for the opportunity.”
