Inside Line Promotions – FORT WORTH, Texas (April 9, 2018) – Tony Bruce Jr. showed improvement throughout the Tony Stewart Presents the Vankor Texas Sprint Car Nationals last weekend at Texas Motor Speedway.
Bruce Jr. and car owner Mike Hayashi opened the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com doubleheader on Friday by placing fifth in a heat race.
“I got tight on the first lap and washed up out of the groove,” Bruce Jr. said. “I fell in line after that. It really put us behind the eight ball.”
Bruce Jr. advanced from fourth to third place in a B Main to earn a transfer into the back of the main event, but he pulled off the track a few laps in and was credited with a 23rd-place finish.
“We were starting in the back on a track was so heavy and tough to pass on,” he said. “Instead of wearing the equipment out we decided to play it smart by pulling into the pits early.”
The team returned to the oval on Saturday, but the finale didn’t start much better. Bruce Jr. picked up a position to finish sixth in a heat race, which again relegated him to a B Main. This time he quickly powered into the runner-up position and maintained it to garner a transfer into the 20th starting position for the 30-lap A Main.
“The track was tough to pass on early,” he said. “In the B Main it started to widen out and in the A Main it was really racy. We advanced, but I felt like we tightened the car up too much and struggled with it in the A Main. We were still able to advance and come out of there with a decent finish.”
Bruce Jr. maneuvered to a 14th-place result.
“Thanks to Mike for the opportunity,” he said. “We’ll keep working at this whenever we get the opportunity to race together.”
