Inside Line Promotions – KILGORE, Texas (May 28, 2019) – Tony Bruce Jr. earned his first two podium finishes of the season last weekend, including his first feature victory since September 2017.
Bruce Jr. guided the Mike Hayashi owned sprint car to a runner-up result on Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, prior to winning on Sunday at LoneStar Speedway to cap the ASCS Gulf South Region and ASCS Lone Star Region doubleheader.
“It’s huge,” he said. “You never know when your last win or next win is going to be. Each win means something. It’s a nice, reassuring thing to know you can still get the job done. You just have to build on it from there and take that confidence and try to do it again.”
Saturday began with Bruce Jr. charging from fourth to win a heat race at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. That locked him into the feature redraw and he pulled the No. 1 to line up on the pole for the A Main.
“We had a really good car in the heat and a strong car throughout the feature,” he said. “I started to fade toward the end of the feature. Wayne (Johnson) was really good and I was average. I led the first 10 laps. Then I was running second when I fell off the track at one point and fell back to fourth. I worked my way back to second.”
Bruce Jr.’s second-place outing was his best run of the season until Sunday at LoneStar Speedway, where he finished second in a heat race to again make the feature redraw. This time he pulled the No. 5 to start the main event fifth.
“We had discussed some changes we were going to make on the car to make it a little better,” he said. “After the heat race I felt like we made the right calls. We didn’t know how well the feature would go, but we were able to make the right adjustments.”
Bruce Jr. took the lead on Lap 11 and held on for his 38th career ASCS triumph.
“I was running the bottom the first part of the race to get to second,” he said. “On a restart we packed in the top and got it to where we could race on it. I went to the top and was able to drive right by and stayed on the top until right at the end when I started searching.”
Next up Bruce Jr. and Hayashi will tackle the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour’s Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek, which begins Saturday at Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas.
